The Difference Between Dry and Dehydrated Skin

September 11, 2019

There’s no arguing that dry skin is the pits.

No one wants to deal with flaky, itchy skin that appears dull and lackluster, but how do you know if your skin is just dry or if there’s something more going on?

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are very different although both tend to feel the same - just plain dry.  In fact, dehydrated skin is a skin condition, whereas dry skin is a skin type that you’ll likely have over your lifetime.

If you’re shaking your head in confusion then don’t worry!  Let's clear things up for you!

Dry skin

Is your skin usually a little itchy and flaky? Do you feel dry everywhere else on your body, including hands, scalp, and legs?  Does your moisturizer and lotion absorb rather quickly?

If you answered yes, then you most likely have dry skin.

Dry skin has fewer oil glands, which also means a lack of protection against environmental aggressors. It can also mean an acceleration in the signs of aging and an overall dullness or lack of radiance in your skin .

To treat dry skin, we recommend a lipid-rich moisturizers, that act like a strong wall to keep moisture in and irritants out.  Also look for ingredients such as hydrating oils to replenish, restore and add brilliance without clogging pores and causing an imbalance.

Dehydrated Skin

This skin condition is due to thirsty skin that is in desperate need of some water.

While dry skin is more superficial and can be targeted with the right products, dehydrated skin is a little more complex.

This skin condition is characterized by red, inflamed skin that may even be quite congested. Many people don’t realize that you can actually suffer from oily skin along with dehydrated skin. Remember, dry skin lacks oil but dehydrated skin simply lacks water.

Here are a few ways in which you can tackle dehydrated skin:

Hydrate!

Yes, if you're dehydrated you must hydrate!  For skin, this should be both internally and externally.  Aim for at least 8 glasses of pure, filtered water per day. Herbal teas count towards your total water intake and can help to give you an antioxidant or vitamin boost depending on your choice tea.

For external hydration, opt for moisturizers  like our Brilliance Protection Souffle with water-rich, natural ingredients such as cucumber extract and algae that rehydrate and balance skin.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin build-up, which is very important, otherwise the products you apply won’t absorb into your skin, they will just sit on top without penetrating. Exfoliate at least once or twice a week.

Limit caffeine

Nothing saps water out of the skin cells faster than caffeine so you may want to consider cutting down on those endless cups of Joe.  Aim for more water, and have a glass along with your coffee or drink herbal tea in between.
