Choosing the Right Skincare Products: Ingredient Safety for Moms

Choosing the Right Skincare Products: Ingredient Safety for Moms

The average woman incorporates as many as 12 different personal care products into her daily routine. But did you know that many of these products contain harmful toxins and chemicals that could impact fertility and reproductive health? If you aren’t using skincare with clean, safe ingredients, you could be exposing yourself and baby to substances that aren't just harsh on your skin, but are also harmful to your health.

This is why many women decide to start a clean skincare journey when they're planning to become a mom.

Just because an ingredient is naturally or organically sourced, doesn’t mean it poses zero harm. There are no specific requirements or regulations from the FDA when it comes to a company labeling their beauty products in such a way, so the best thing to do is always read labels and look at ingredients.  For instance, shockingly, a product can legally list "fragrance" as a single ingredient, even though it may consist of a dozen to hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are endocrine disruptors. This lack of transparency makes it challenging for us to know what we're really putting on our skin. dr roohi endocrine disruptors

When it comes to toxins in your skincare, the risks are real.

Endocrine disruptors, often referred to as hormone disruptors, are natural and man-made chemicals that can interfere with the endocrine system.  They can be found in many places in our environment, including common beauty products, and are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune, and other problems. Notably, they can have harmful effects on the health of both the mother and baby, and can disrupt our hormones, cause skin irritation, harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer.

Two known hormone disruptors are parabens and phthalates. Parabens are often used as a preservative in personal care products and have been linked to reproductive health issues, respiratory problems, allergies, and skin irritations.  Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics more durable, and can transfer to the food and drinks we ingest. They can have negative effects on fetal development and may increase the risk of low birth weight, childhood asthma, and neurodevelopment issues.

If you are trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding, you want to pay close attention to ways to avoid exposure to these hormone disruptors in your environment.
