Karina Lozano: Taking Care of YOU on Your Mama Journey

January 15, 2023

Working in the beauty industry, Karina Lozano built an entire career around the heart of our mission here at Matrescence: helping other moms feel good and embrace the importance of “Me Time.”  This week she gives us a behind the scenes look into the struggles she encountered as a new mom, and reminds us how important it is to invest in our tribe, both within our home and outside of it.

Karina, tell us a little about you:

I’m a Hairstylist, Makeup Artist, & mama of 4! We always wanted a big family from the start. I absolutely love being a mommy! Especially because I have a little of each stage right now, a high schooler, a kindergartner, and a 3 1/2 year old toddler, and my baby of 16 months.

What does self care look like for you?

The classic self care for me is a trip to the spa and being pampered. A facial, a massage, or even going to brunch with a friend alone to de-stress from the chaos. (lol)

How does Matrescence’s Mission to “mother the mother” resonate with you as a mom and in your career?

I love my clients. Especially if they are mamas! I get to pamper them by giving them not just a haircut or makeover, but a whole experience so they can look and feel good. I enhance their beauty! It’s a time where they can come see me and actually RELAX.

Do you have any daily/weekly rituals that you stick to?

Absolutely! My daily skincare routine, everyday. My New Year’s resolution is to complete a 30-45 min workout at least twice a week. So far, we’re doing it!

What’s one thing you wish you’d known before becoming a mom?

I wish I had known how lonely it can get. Having a true tribe of strong women who are there for you and vice versa is not a want, it’s truly a need. I also wish I knew that feeling “all of the feels,” (especially the bad feelings) is just temporary, and that everything will be more than okay!

What has been the hardest part of your mama journey? The most rewarding?

Going through postpartum depression. Not a lot of people know this about me. It was the most difficult, challenging moment in my life. I didn’t understand it. However, the most rewarding part was having my children through it all. They were so little so they had no clue mommy was going through a rough patch, but little did they know they were helping me heal just by being their happy selves! I must also add that having a supportive, hands on partner by my side is such a huge blessing! I remember when I just wanted to cry and didn’t understand why. My husband and I had a “code word” where we both knew I was having that horrible, overwhelming feeling. In those moments he would just hold me tightly in his arms and reassure me that he was there for us and everything would be okay. Little by little, through those moments I started feeling back to my genuinely happy self!
