Shining a Light on Black Maternal Health Week

April 11, 2022

April 2022 marks the fifth year anniversary of the Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) campaign. Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, BMHW is a week of awareness, activism, and community building intended to:

  • Deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the US;
  • Amplify community-driven policy, research, and care solutions;
  • Center the voices of Black Mamas, women, families, and stakeholders;
  • Provide a national platform for Black-led entities and efforts on maternal health, birth and reproductive justice; and
  • Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.

Black Maternal Health Week takes place every year from April 11 –17 and was officially recognized by the White House on April 13th, 2021.

Matrescence is proud to shine a light on Black Maternal Health Week and to stand alongside women like Rachel Nicks, founder of Birth Queen, in their efforts to ensure equitable access to healthcare before, during, and after pregnancy.

We recently spoke to Rachel about Birth Queen, a non-profit whose mission is to educate, support, and empower Black women, parents and birthing people, enriching the Black birth experience and saving lives.
