Pregnancy is a critical time to be mindful of chemical exposure as it can adversely affect both mom and baby in many ways such as increasing the risk of certain cancers or birth defects.
Here are some simple but important steps you can take toward a toxin-free pregnancy - and beyond!
1. Choose Safe Skincare
This may come as a shock, but just because a product includes “organic” or “natural” ingredients, it doesn't mean it's necessarily safe for pregnancy. In fact, it could include chemicals that are not only harmful for your health but could also affect your baby's development.
Research via the Environmental Working Group shows that toxic pollution begins before birth, with about 287 different chemicals being found in umbilical cord blood, entering via the placenta.
Of those chemicals, 180 are known to cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.
Always check the safety of your pregnancy skincare products on the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. We’ve partnered with the EWG to ensure that all our products obtained a top rank on their scale with our Rose Glow Purifying Cleanser being EWG Verified ™ , meeting EWG’s strictest criteria for transparency and health!
2. Eat Organic
Organic, fresh foods are always the best choice in avoiding pesticides. You can use EWG’s Shoppers Guide to Pesticides to determine which fruits and veggies you should always buy organic and those that are okay to buy conventionally grown. Choose milk and meat produced without added growth hormones. Limit canned food, since can linings usually contain the synthetic estrogen, bisphenol A (BPA).
3. Clean Greener
Another way we are commonly exposed to toxins is through household cleaning products, pet treatments and air fresheners. Even if they don’t come into contact with your skin, inhalation is enough to cause damage.
It's time to swap them out for safer alternatives. Some ideas include using vinegar instead of bleach, baking soda to scrub your tiles and hydrogen peroxide to remove stains.
These three tips will go a long way in making your womb a safe home!
